It’s not what you are thinking.  After serious consideration we realized that a cheap van rental (or a van rental at any price) just wasn’t going to cut it.  In order to cut down on moving costs, we thought we could get away with selling a bunch of items and moving with a van but our math was flawed.  Multiple trips, gas prices, our precious time.. things add up quickly.  Sometimes it just makes sense to go with a larger van (or truck) and make it a full size van rental or a  one way van rental.

There are a number of things you can do to cut corners and save money.  If you’ve got older furniture and are going to be looking to buy some new stuff, selling your old stuff before you move makes sense.  You’re not going to get a lot of money for your old stuff, but the extra space and having less stuff to move might be exactly what you need.  I sold our living room set, dining room set, and one of the bedroom sets on CraigsList before we left, and sadly we didn’t get anything close to what I had hoped we would.  Anyone buying on CraigsList (or Kijiji in Canada) are looking for one thing, a real deal.  If you ask $400, they will offer $300 (although I’m sure some joker will email or call you and offer you $50).  Be sure to price accordingly if this is what you are going to do.

If you’re just moving a few items, a cheap van rental makes sense however if you have to make more than a couple trips, a truck is your best bet.  Consider the amount of fuel you’ll be using (which will be less than a truck rental for sure), any mileage you’ll be putting on the cheap van rental, and your time.

If you have the option, try moving in the middle of the month (or at least a week before or after the end of the month).  Moving at the end of the month is the busiest moving day and as such, the companies renting out their vehicles usually increase the cost (supply and demand).  If you need to rent a vehicle for moving, you can usually get cheaper rates if you pick off-peak dates.

Some rental companies will also give you discounts if you can return their vehicle the same day you rent it.  This doesn’t always work if you are moving to another country though.

One-way rentals are usually one of the most expensive types of rentals.  If you call around and you’re lucky, sometimes you can find vehicles that need to go back to another location and they will offer you great discounts.  These rentals are harder to find, but they are out there if you’re lucky.
